One of the questions I often hear from new home business owners, especially those who traditionally do most of their marketing offline (think party plans like tupperware), is whether or not they need a website to promote their home business. The answer is no, but it can help tremendously.

For starters, you could continue to market strictly offline, or you can even do some marketing online on forums and such and refer people to a phone number or email address as a way to contact you. For example, if you are looking for new customers or reps, you could post on craigslist.com and have them email you for more information.

If the company you are working for provides you with a website that will track your sales and signups, you could also send people there.

Here is the problem though… all of the options above limit you in one way or the other. The biggest problem is that you can’t optimize your message to get the best response possible. Online advertising and promotions are a great way to build your business. Not only can you find plenty of inexpensive advertisement opportunities online, you can also create a site that will attract visitors and thus potential customers or reps for free through search engine traffic.

We’ll go into the specifics of setting up a site and other promotional strategies like building a list etc. in the weeks to come. For now, just realize that having your own website (aside from one that your direct sales company provides you with) can be a great thing and setting one up is a lot easier and cheaper than you may think.

If you’re ready to get started, I recommend getting some basic hosting with Momwebs.com and setting up a word press blog on your hosting. Momwebs.com has some great tutorials and excellent support to help you accomplish this.
